NSW: Five die in four separate crashes on NSW roads

SYDNEY, Aug 14 AAP - Five people are dead following a spate of accidents and a fatalhit and run on NSW roads overnight, police said today.

Two teenagers died instantly and another two are in a stable condition after theircar collided with a tree near Taree on NSW's mid north coast overnight.

Police said two passengers - a 17-year-old girl from New Mexico in the USA and a Tareeman, 18, died instantly after their car veered off Pampoolah Road near Taree hitting atree at 8.30pm (AEST) last night.

The driver, an 18-year-old man from Wingham and the front seat passenger, a 16-year-oldTaree girl, were taken to Manning Base Hospital in a stable condition.

A man has also died after his truck hit a bridge on the Mitchell Highway between Bathurstand Orange in the early hours of this morning.

Police said the single vehicle accident at Dunkeld caused the closure of the MitchellHighway in both directions with traffic expected to be diverted along the Mid WesternHighway through Blayney for several hours.

A 71-year-old man from Fairfield in Sydney's west died after being struck down whilealong Kerry Street, Sanctuary Point on the NSW south coast at 6.30pm.

Police said the man was run over by a vehicle which witnesses believe was possiblya VC (1980-1981) model maroon Holden Commodore sedan which failed to stop following thecrash.

A nearby doctor was called to the scene but the man died suffering severe injuries.

In another pedestrian accident, a 18-year-old Bringelly man died after being hit bya Holden Rodeo utility while walking with a teenage companion along North Avenue, Rossmorein Sydney's south-west at 7pm.

Police said the man was seriously injured and taken to Liverpool Hospital but couldnot be revived. The 17-year-old Rossmore girl was taken to hospital with minor injuriesto her right arm and hip.

The 57-year-old driver of the utility spoke to crash investigators at the scene butwill be formally interviewed later today.
