Fed: Labor seeks greater reef protection
Labor says protecting the Great Barrier Reef from oil drilling and the effects of climatechange is essential for the tourism industry.
Opposition Leader SIMON CREAN says the Great Barrier Reef is Australia's greatest naturaltourism asset, attracting 1.6 million people a year.
Mr CREAN says Labor would support legislation to ban oil exploration near the GreatBarrier Reef Marine Park.
Labor also wants ratification of the Kyoto protocol on greenhouse gases to tackle theeffects of climate change on the reef.
It will also set up a group of members and senators to raise awareness about the economicimportance of tourism.
